Throughout highschool I applied to various school affiliated as well as local art/photographic competitions, events, and festivals. I also worked hard and extensively on doing the medium which I preferred most- which would often detriment my academic performance, so dont do that, try to balance it- i dont know whether your out of highschool yet or entering or not entering college- how much free time you have. I also network, still, such as here, Behance network, facebook, celeste prize, and other online galleries to get exposure. Mostly its about putting your best work forward and trying to get noticed. As well, its also trying to be a part of something- a tournament, gallery, fair, etc-, with the knowledge that investors, critics, gallery owners, art patrons, etc are likely watching. To fortify and attempt to make my work more interesting, I often read and research about others in a similar field, take art history courses, and try to implement culture- science, history, social or political structures, past and present, so that people take interest- as they might specialize in the field.
Also, if you want to be more activist, you can create propaganda/awareness posters for politicians, events, organizations, etc that you sincerely believe in. Establishing yourself as a WORKING artists requires that you create a resume, then start taking basic jobs on sites such as craigs list or other more artistically-focuses commission sites- before you get an agent to bring work to YOU.
